Our Cupola turns 16! 🎉 Launched on 8 February 2010 aboard Space Shuttle Endeavour (STS-130), the Cupola is the panoramic control tower of the International Space Station (ISS): a dome-shaped module with windows for observing and guiding operations outside the Station. It’s a pressurised observation and work area that hosts command and control workstations and other hardware. Its 360º view means spacewalks can be observed from Cupola, along with visiting spacecraft and external areas of the ISS. Cupola plays a key role in external Station activities. But Cupola is more than a workstation. This miniature capsule shoots off at 4000 km per hour, mimicking the aerodynamics of a Mars atmospheric entry before crashing at supersonic speeds. This activity is part of a series of experiments with a scaled-down version of the ExoMars landing module – measuring just 8 cm in diameter compared to the actual 3.8-metre spacecraft that will carry the Rosalind Franklin rover. The tiny replica of the Entry, Descent and Landing Module (EDLM) blasts off from a bore gun faster than a speeding bullet. These tests provide critical data on how the spacecraft will behave during its entry into the martian atmosphere. What does metal made in space look like up close? 🤘 Thanks to our first metal 3D printer aboard the @iss, we’re finding out. This pioneering device melted stainless steel in microgravity to build a complete test sample - layer by layer - before sending it back to Earth for analysis. Now, our engineers are examining every ridge, pore and flaws to understand how printing behaves beyond our planet. Why does this matter? Because future astronauts will need to make tools, replacement parts and maybe even spacecraft structures on demand, without waiting for resupply from Earth.
