Max’s braids in the hospital scenes aren’t just aesthetic. When someone is ill, it’s totally normal to braid the hair to protect it and keep it from tangling. Sadie actually had shorter hair when we started Season 5, and we knew we were going to do a lot with her hair. Therefore we put a wig on her, to keep continuity and to protect her real hair while still getting the looks we needed for the story. We left a tiny bit of her own fringe out in front so the hairline feels softer and more natural on camera. Blink and you’ll miss my favorite part of the job. After all the prep underneath, there’s this one second when the wig finally goes on. That’s when the transformation really happens. Caleb’s real dad used to cut Lucas’s hair for Stranger Things. We wanted Lucas to look like every 1980s kid in Hawkins the kind whose mom trims his hair in the kitchen before school. Not too perfect. Not too styled. Just real. He’d cut it at home before filming, which saved time on those early call mornings when the kids could only be in hair & makeup for ten minutes. On shoot days, we’d blend in a touch of Aprotech at the hairline to round it out and keep that soft, boyish shape. I’ve always loved working with Caleb watching how far he’s come, how smart and insightful he is, and what a wonderful human he’s grown into.
