‘It was dystopia,’ recalls artist and illustrator Matthew Rice (@matthewricewatercolours) of first seeing Ham Court, the Oxfordshire house he and his then wife, Emma Bridgewater, bought in 2012. What began as ‘a bit of a Cinderella project’ started with nearly a year of clearing away the detritus, before evolving into a gradual labour of love. Rather than a wholesale makeover, the restoration unfolded with an unhurried spirit that extended naturally into the decoration, guided as much by circumstance as by intuition. ‘I guess this is basically the manifestation of all my childhood dreams,’ says Callie Coles (@calliecoles) of the romantic Devon home that she shares with her husband Toby, their three children and a whole menagerie of animals. ‘I always dreamed that I would get to have a pony at home, but I never thought we would actually manage to have stables and fields and space to do all the things I imagined.’ This world of ‘merry bedlam’, where ponies are just as welcome in the kitchen, as chickens and dogs, is one that has earnt Callie legions of fans on Instagram, excited to see the family’s latest antics. Just as fascinated, we paid a visit to Callie’s home after it had been decked out for Christmas, arriving just as a plate of mince pies, cooling on the kitchen table, were snaffled by their eldest son Jesse’s mischievous dachshund, Bridget. But that’s all part of it, and what matters most for the Coles family at this time of year is the real meaning of Christmas. ‘It’s about looking after the people who need looking after,’ says Callie.
