Native Star Boutique (@nativestarboutique) just opened in San Diego’s Gaslamp District by Ruth-Ann Thorn of @n8iv_beauty She is a member of the Rincon Band of Luiseño/ Payómkawichum Indians in Southern California and is the first Native woman (and Native in general) to own land in the Gaslamp District. Saw this sweet Anishinaabe girl on TikTok post about feeling out of place at her prom because she wore a ribbon skirt her auntie made. She said it was the only thing she had to wear, and received an onslaught of disgusting comments about her “cheap” beadwork, informal outfit, and that people feel bad when “people have ugly cultural wear”. The fact she didn’t ask for anyone’s opinions and people are so comfortable judging a teenage girl breaks my heart. On MMIW awareness day no less.
